Hello again from Antonette Gaffney! For those of you who supported the Swaziland AIDS Assistance Project that I organized last year ….and others too….( www.aids.net.au/aids-global-swaziland.htm) , I’m inviting your help and support once again….this time to help Malawi!
This year, I have developed a 'statement' calendar with the theme: “United We Stand a Chance”. This calendar will be issued in December to coincide with World AIDS Day - 1 December 2009 – and seeks to generate HIV/AIDS awareness, highlight important facts and common misconceptions, and remind us that it is everyone’s responsibility to fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS.
The proceeds from the sales of this calendar will be donated to the Australian AIDS Fund Inc. (AAFI) to support their current education and awareness campaigns in Malawi. Due to the important role education plays in eradicating this devastating disease, the AAFI has been active in building numerous primary and secondary schools in Malawi, to provide educational opportunities for students either living with HIV/AIDS or who are AIDS orphans. Through this initiative, students are taught important AIDS-related issues (such as causes, effects and preventions), in an environment free of stigma and discrimination. This project hopes to break the ‘culture of ignorance’ that is still largely ingrained in the social fabric of numerous countries around the world, and promote empowerment through knowledge and understanding.
The calendars will go on sale 10 December 2009 at a cost of $20.
For details on how to purchase a calendar or for any further information about the project, please join the project’s Facebook page: “United We Stand a Chance” – World AIDS Day Calendar, or you can contact me directly on antonette.gaffney@gmail.com or 0432 342 991.
