Sculpt a memorial
By Brian Haill
Just a month ago, Melbourne was shocked and saddened by what
many now regard as the Good Samaritan killing: the fatal shooting
of one man and the wounding of another as both went to the rescue
of a woman being assaulted.
It would be sad if such sacrifices were to go unmarked, or be
barely acknowledged by something such as a simple plaque on a
pole.
We invite Lord Mayor John So to consider commissioning a handsome
sculpture to honour these two Good Samaritans: it would be regarded
as an international badge of pride for Melbourne and it should
attract the support of both the city council and the State Government.
Perhaps by combining their skills, a group of sculpors might be
encouraged to so mark this "Good Samaritan Corner".
Maybe the Melbourne City Council could launch a design competition.
We're a small AIDS-care agency, and given that people living with
HIV/AIDS daily rely on a host of Good Samaritans, we would also
contribute to such an initiative.
