It's a small world and it's surprising how Providence brings people together.

It was through the Australian AIDS Fund's involvement in the Knitted Jumpers for Africa's orphans project (November 2006) that it came into contact with a remarkable Melbourne couple, Chris and Marj Laughton, and their wonderful Malawi TSP program... the Transhaven Schools Projects.

You can visit their website at www.transhavenprojects.com and contact them at info@transhavenprojects.com

The Australian AIDS Fund Inc has been delighted to help out in funding some key parts of their education projects.

Many children throughout Malawi rely on fragile, open,or grass-walled thatched shelters(like the one below) for their schooling.

Children are taught in English and Chichewa, the two national languages.

Now planning's underway on the construction of a new solid building, an all-weather brick classroom block ...a Nursery School...divided for the different age groups of more than 100 children, with their own toilet facilities, kitchen, indoor and outdoor play facilities.

It'll be built on a 3 hectare site that the Australian AIDS Fund bought...opposite the Transhaven Chilunga Secondary School.

The Transhaven Chilunga Secondary School

Some of its students have to walk to the college from up to 10km away and didn't have the resources to provide for their lunch. The Parent/ Teachers Association had offered to provide the food for these students and the college was able to provide a cook. They just needed to build an indoor kitchen....

The Australian AIDS Fund Inc was also able to help out here too by funding this project. It's now fully operational!

In December 2006, The Australian AIDS Fund provided the funding to enable the secondary school to buy 2 pieces of land....one of more than 3 hectares opposite the school (as mentioned above) ...and a further agricultural strip nearby. The larger piece of land will allow the school to expand through the years ahead and,in the meantime, to be used as a significant income earner as a crop growing area. The smaller strip, by a river, will also be used for agriculture.

The new Nursery School we've also built on the same site, and its companion crafts work building for young mothers, are  also completed and are ready for the start of the new school year, when over 150 youngsters are expected to be enrolled.

The authorities are also confident that the electricity powerline will be at the site and connected this month.

Poles are already at the site....ready to carry the wires that will be strung from Matawale, the far side of the Mulunguzi River. With the arrival of the rains, a lot of work has also been done preparing The Transhaven Village Farmland for crop cultivation. A great effort all round!

Work has also begun on the construction of a Volunteers Accommodation Unit that'll shelter overseas visitors, including from Australia, seeking to offer their various talents to the Transhaven Village community.

Update: September 2007.

Much done, much still to do

During the last quarter two new buildings (below right) were completed for the Transhaven Trust Nursery School (TTNS), only the enclosing “security fence” is to be completed. The two buildings contain classrooms, an office, storeroom, kitchen and eating area, watchman's room, and a development room for the village women to be taught sewing and other productive activities.

There is also to be a garden within the enclosed area for the children to learn from through hands on experience. Most of the funding and the land on which the school is built have been donated by the Australian AIDs Fund, Inc that has been very supportive of the project to help the disadvantaged village children. More are expected to come to the TTNS during this quarter.

Equipment is urgently needed, including little tables and chairs for the 5 and 6 year olds to write on, for the office and kitchen, for indoor and outdoor play times, including educational toys and art easels, and for them to enjoy the garden.
At the Transhaven Chilunga Secondary School (TCSS) the foundations are being laid for the new Science and Computer Laboratories Building. Our grateful thanks again to the Australian AIDS Fund, Inc for providing the funds for this building, due for completion before end-September.

The Laboratory, Maize Mill and other activities would not be possible without electrical power, which is not present in Thom Allan Village or other areas southeast of Zomba. Thanks again to the generosity of the Australian AIDS Fund, Inc, this is now becoming a reality with with payment made and the go-ahead given by ESCOM (Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi) to extend the power lines from the nearest location on the other side of the Mulunguzi River to the TSP area in the Thom Allan Village.

May - August 2007

A second 3 hectare block of land was also bought with funding from The Australian AIDS Fund Incorporated for the agricultural projects planned by the Transhaven organisation in association with its Transhaven Chilunga Secondary School across the road. This new site...to be known as The Transhaven Village... will help in the school's teaching of food production, food security and business studies.

Arrangements are now under way to bring an electricity supply line to the Transhaven Village site as well as to the school itself. The introduction of a regular power supply will transform life at Chilunga, providing the students (and staff) with a good light for night-time studies and homework.

Also being built on the Transhaven Village site is a Library, Science and Technology Laboratories building....a special, purpose-built building, with dust-proofing and a secure environment, both of which are essential for electronic equipment and delicate laboratory items. This is also being funded by the Australian AIDS Fund Incorporated, which is also assisting in the construction of residential accommodation foroverseas volunteers...many of whom will come from Australia.

The following is a plan of the proposed Volunteers Hostel.
